imgQ: Summer is here and my family could not be more excited!! We love to spend time outdoors barbequing and swimming all summer long. What is the best way to protect our skin during these fun outdoor activities?

A: Stock up on sunscreen so you are never without it. Choose an SPF that provides both UVA & UVB protection. Don't forget to reapply every 80 minutes, especially after being in the water. Keep a bottle of SPF in your purse, car, and in your gym bag! I also recommend wearing a hat and clothing that provides added protection.

Conquer those calories!
Add these simple steps to your daily routine to burn more calories.

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator... always!
  • Stop looking for that perfect parking space. Instead, purposely park farther away so you have more steps in your day.
  • Multi-Task: Watch your favorite TV show or movie while doing crunches, lunges, planks, or jumping jacks.

Make small changes!
Diets come and go, but making a few simple substitutions to your eating habits can really enhance results.

  • Go for nuts instead of croutons for that extra crunch you want in your salad.
  • Opt for non-fat plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It tastes the same with much less guilt!
  • Swap out rice for quinoa.
  • Try chia seeds instead of breadcrumbs.
  • Skip the whole milk and try almond or soymilk.

Yummy Hummus
The perfect snack for a summer picnic!
  • One 15-ounce can (425 grams) chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 cup (59 ml) fresh lemon juice, about 1 large lemon
  • 1/4 cup (59 ml) tahini
  • Half of a large garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon kosher salt, depending on taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons water

  1. In food processor bowl, combine tahini and lemon juice. Process for 1 minute.
  2. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl then turn on and process for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin and the salt to the whipped tahini and lemon juice mixture. Process for 30 seconds, scrape sides and bottom of bowl then process another 30 seconds.
  4. Open can of chickpeas, drain liquid then rinse well with water.
  5. Add half of the chickpeas to the food processor. Process for 1 minute. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl, add remaining chickpeas and process for 1 to 2 minutes or until thick and quite smooth.
  6. Slowly add 2 to 3 tablespoons of water until the consistency is perfect.
      **Serve with your favorite veggies, crackers,
      or pita bread.
